Battling Light, written by award-winning writer and actor Cooper Bates and produced by JG Foundation and Winnie’s Child Productions, is a powerful stage production centered on Black men’s health, family, resilience, and the life-saving importance of early screening.
Inspired by Joe Greene’s powerful and deeply personal journey with colon cancer, Battling Light tells the story of a man whose understanding of health begins to change as he witnesses both of his parents face serious illnesses. Their experiences cause Joe to examine the silence and hesitation surrounding medical care among Black men and what it truly means to take responsibility for one’s health.
Through storytelling, music, and the energy of a live DJ, the production brings Joe’s memories and experiences to life in a way that is heartfelt, relatable, and engaging. Ultimately, Battling Light delivers a powerful message about breaking the silence, recognizing the importance of early detection, and understanding that sometimes the strongest thing a man can do is take care of himself.
