Spirit of Carl Sandburg – The People’s Poet In His Own Words
Thurs, Sept 11 2025 • 7 pm
In 2019, Max Walter, a former elementary school teacher, created Spirit of Carl Sandburg: The People’s Poet in His Own Words. The play is approved by the family. Walter was drawn to the poet’s take on political themes, such as Abraham Lincoln’s call for freedom and the poet’s role in politics, as well as the universal themes of the glory of children, family, the ephemeral nature of beauty, time, mortality and death. The play consists of Walter’s impersonation of Sandburg through recitation of poems, stories and songs, as well as some of Lincoln’s most profound utterances. Max Walter is deeply grateful for the honor of impersonating and representing Carl Sandburg–someone who speaks compellingly to the issues of both his own era and today.
“Spirit of Carl Sandburg is a captivating sensation. Max Walter embodies a remembrance of America through the very words, stories and music of Carl Sandburg. Many have heard something of this great poet but all leave this one-man performance with a deep respect for eloquent language and greater pride in the American experience.” John C, Mt. Shasta
“We are moved by his spiritual insights into the natural world, human connections, and sensitivities to our given life conditions. The portrayal is engaging, rhythmic and full of nuance. We come away with a compassionate comprehension of a mind compelled to capture our common and uncommon experiences in the framework of poetic exhiliration.” Ellen S., Redding
“An undercurrent of love throughout.” – Jessica M., Red Bluff, CA
